Spiny Oyster and Sleeping Beauty Mix Cluster Necklace Signed Emma Lincoln
Stone:
This mini cluster necklace features clusters of Red, Orange and Purple Spiny Oyster, Sleeping Beauty, and Green Gaspeite Turquoise stones. Handmade by renowned artist Emma Lincoln.
Spiny Oyster is often used by Native American artists to make inlays or cabochon setting in fine jewelry. It comes from the shell of the bivalve mollusk, Spondylus varius. The scientific name, ‰ÛÏSpondylus‰ in latin, it means ‰ÛÏspines on its back.‰ It is also known as Thorny Oyster, Spiny Oyster, Spondylus, and Spondylid. The soft and juicy interior of Spondylus is edible, so the Spiny Oyster‰۪s valued for its hard, outer shell as well as its interior meat. Despite its name contain ‰ÛÏoyster‰, the Spiny Oyster is much more closer relatit ve of scallop tham oyster.
The most commonly used Spondylus shell colors include orange, reds, and purples and may include distinct striations and color variations. One also finds pink, red, brown, yellow, orange, and white on the market. The Yellow Spiny Oyster‰۪s especially rare.
Artist:
Emma Lincoln is a renowned Navajo silversmith and jewelry maker. She was born in Brigham City, Utah and was raised in Vanderwagon, New Mexico. Today, she works as a master silversmith in Gallup, New Mexico. After her husband passed away, this is how she supports her 5 children. She started practicing the art of silversmithing when she was 15 years old. Emma's love for silversmithing and creativity has made her one of our favorite artists. Unfortunately Emma left us in early 2016. Anything that is still available at Toqos were the last ones made before she passed :(
My Philosophy:
I choose every piece of jewelry based on the value of the stone. Unlike most of the Turquoise on the market, the stone has to be high quality (not stabilized, not color treated and not reconstituted).
I also love jewelry with unique character and great craftsmanship. What this means is that you are getting jewelry that is a showstopper and not to mention a great investment.
